Mother’s Day Events Around Indiana

Approximately 122 million phone calls will be made on this holiday, and one-fourth of all the flowers purchased throughout the year will be bought this weekend. By all means, celebrate Mother’s Day with phone calls and flowers, but here are a few ideas for additional ways to celebrate throughout the state.

Northern Indiana

If Mom enjoys classical music, treat her to brunch at Don Hall’s Gas House (305 E Superior Street, Ft. Wayne) followed by a concert curated by the Ft. Wayne Philharmonic. “Shining River” will be presented at Rhinehart Recital Hall, Rhinehart Music Center, Purdue University Fort Wayne from 2-4 p.m.

If gardens are more her thing, visit the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory (1100 S. Calhoun Street, Ft. Wayne) for Mother’s Day in the Garden. Instead of buying her flowers, you can purchase plants at their plant sale. The conservatory will be open from 12-4 p.m.

If she’s into animals, you can take her to the Washington Park Zoo, 115 Lake Shore Drive, in Michigan City. They will offer free admission for all moms and grandmothers with a paid child admission. The zoo features over 90 different species, and many of their animals have been rescued.

If you’re in the Valparaiso area, visit the DIY Wine and Workshop at Anderson Winery, 430 East US Highway 6 on Saturday, May 11. Local artists will lead workshops teaching various techniques including origami lotus flowers, textured copper earrings, and layered nature scenes. Price is based on the number of workshops you want to attend.

Central Indiana

Mother’s Day Weekend at the Indianapolis Zoo will include “Proud Mom” stickers, photo opportunities and a special scavenger hunt highlighting interesting facts about animal mothers.

If Mom enjoys art, treat her to Mother’s Day Masterpieces and Mimosas at Future Friends HMC Art Gallery, 1043 Virginia Avenue, Indianapolis, from 2-4 p.m. Tickets are available on Eventbrite.com.

To celebrate Mom and support a good cause, take her to Girl Talk Inc.’s Mother’s Day brunch at the Marott Crystal Ballroom, 2626 North Meridian Street, Indianapolis. This mother-daughter event will support their mentoring program and will include jazz music, mimosas and a silent auction. Tickets are available on Eventbrite.com.

Southern Indiana

If you’re in the Madison area, treat mom to the Madison in Bloom Spring Garden Tour where you can visit five private gardens not normally open to the public and one house museum garden. The tour is open from 12-4 p.m. and begins at the corner of First and Mill streets.

In Columbus visit Tina’s Traditional Old English Kitchen at 1702 Pennsylvania Street for a brunch buffet that will include savory pastries such as quiche and pork pies, fresh fruit, cheeses, tea sandwiches and cakes. Tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite.com. For those in central Indiana, Tina’s has second location in Carmel at 30 North Rangeline Road. They will also host a Mother’s Day brunch.
