It’s safe to say we’ve all been through enough this past year and the last thing anyone needs is more stress. Winter can be brutal on your home’s exterior, but serious damage is preventable with diligent care. Here are four things you can do to help preserve and maintain your home and give you a few less things to worry about.
Clean Out Your Gutters
Take the time to properly clean out your gutters and downspouts. As we move into spring you want to make sure that the rain that lands on your roof can exit easily via your gutter system. When water flow is impeded due to debris in your gutter you can end up with sagging gutters which can cause extensive damage. Remember when cleaning out your gutters, be sure to wear gloves and protective eye wear.
Inspect Your Roof for Any Possible Damage
Take a walk around your home and just look at the roof. Do you see any missing shingles? Or maybe even an area that looks different than the rest of the roof? Have a professional come check it out. It may be nothing, but better safe than sorry!
Look at Your Siding
As you walk around your home to look at the roof, take a look at the siding as well. Pieces can become loose or damaged from strong winds or even the occasional soccer ball. Think of siding as your home’s armor. The last thing you want heading into spring unprepared.
Check Out the Attic
Unless your new work from home office is in the attic, you probably don’t spend much time up there. That said, it’s worth taking some time to walk (or crawl) to examine it. Look for any damp spots or evidence of water damage or staining. Issues in the attic often go unnoticed until it is serious. Be sure to wear long sleeves, pants, eye protection, respirator or face mask and maybe even a hood or hat when going into the attic, since you will likely be around exposed insulation. A great time to venture into the attic is during a rainstorm!
